One vanishing art that can still be studied in the interstices of the assault of global retail is vernacular typography. All over the world, there are cities and towns that retain their rich traditions of vernacular signage. Unfortunately, the fate of these typographic havens is being threatened by the uniformity of corporate advertising, which ignores and subverts local history and tradition.

This website seeks to collect and document examples of these vanishing symbols of art and culture.

Vernacular Typography is now a fiscally sponsored project of Artspire, a program of NYFA (ARTSPIRE).

ARTSPIRE is a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1971 to work with the arts community throughout New York State and the United States to develop and facilitate programs in all disciplines. ARTSPIRE will receive grants on behalf of Vernacular Typography, ensure the use of grant funds in accordance with the grant agreements, and will provide program or financial reports as required.
